HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE
When it comes to Homeowner's Insurance, protecting your home's value should be your number one priority. Gaps in your homeowners insurance coverage often result from changes in your home. For instance you might decide to add on a deck or spare bedroom, or build a pool in your back yard. These changes are NOT covered under your homeowner's policy unless your insurance company is notified. As your home changes, so should your insurance.Endorsements
The everyday accumulation artwork, jewelry, and possessions can add a lot to the value of your contents. Make sure these items are endorsed or scheduled onto the policy so that in the event of a loss, you will be financially made whole.Become familiar with your policy and ask questions. Is there replacement cost coverage on the home and personal belongings in the home? Check the limits inside the policy for furs, jewelry, fine arts, business property etc. Most of these items can be added to your policy by endorsement or on a personal articles floater.
Perils
We live in an ever-changing world, and mother nature can sometimes take from us what we have worked very hard to build up. It is very important to double-check with your agent the exclusions and deductable limits for flood, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.Liability
Evaluate your liability exposures. Does your homeowners policy offer enough liability coverage for your needs? An expensive lawsuit could result from an injury on your property or damage to the property of others. A Personal Umbrella may be a consideration. Also, make sure that any household pets and property animals, trampolines, and other liabilities fall under the coverage of your policy.Building Codes
Check community building codes. Sometimes a damaged home, particularly if it's an older home, can't be reconstructed exactly as it was without violating current building codes. For instance, the home may need updated wiring, special windows, or hurricane straps to conform to the new building codes since Hurricane Andrew paid Florida a visit. These losses are not covered under homeowners policy unless Ordinance or Law Coverage is endorsed onto the policy.
A regular homeowners insurance check up is a simple preventative measure that can spare you the financial pain.
